Patient Surveys

UHSM is ranked 6th acute hospital in the NHS in England on performance indicator rank (3rd on raw scores), and highest in the Northwest in the 2007 HCC Inpatient survey. The 2008 report is currently being analysed by the Health Care Commission and will be available in March 2009.

2007 Inpatient Survey Results

The Health Care Commission, the independent watchdog for healthcare in England, oversees the annual surveying of inpatients in acute Trusts to ascertain patient’s views on all areas of care, including hygiene, treatment, admissions, discharges and overall hospital environment.

UHSM has achieved: “A good set of results, particularly for a Trust based in a large city. The Trust is above average on 17 questions and the results are quite positive across the board. The above average scores have a good spread across all areas, particularly good are confidence and trust in nurses and doctors, information about surgery, and pre-op preparation and consent.” (2007 Inpatient Survey). Particularly good scores include:

    • patients not bothered by noise at night
    • patients receive help to eat their meals
    • patients getting answers to questions from doctors and nurses
    • patients having confidence and trust in nurses
    • having adequate nursing staff on duty
    • explaining the risks and benefits of the operation
    • explaining what would be done during the operation/procedure
    • minimal delay to discharge
    • rating of staff working together as a team
    • overall rating of care
    • patients provided with enough information about their condition in A&E

Chief Nurse, Mandy Bailey says: “We are really delighted that 50% of our patients rate the care they receive here as ‘excellent’ and a further 45% consider it ‘very good’ or ‘good’.”

“However, the work doesn’t stop here and there is still plenty more to do,” adds Mandy. “We will be concentrating our efforts on those areas where our ranking is average or below, especially the use of mixed-sex bathrooms and giving patients copies of letters sent to GPs.  Each of our clinical divisions has drawn up an action plan to detail exactly what we need to do to improve our scores and to help us achieve our goal of being the best acute trust in England.”
